Transmission Providers Lack Real-time Grid Data to Meet Order 2023 Deadlines
FERC Order 2023 requires transmission providers to evaluate eight alternative transmission technologies in every generator interconnection cluster study.
Order 1920 separately requires consideration of dynamic line ratings (DLRs), advanced power flow control, advanced conductors and transmission switching in regional transmission planning. That’s real progress on a grid that badly needs it.
But the rules stop short of requiring the thing that makes the most data-dependent of those technologies work: real-time and operational data granular and reliable enough to run them on. This isn’t a sequencing problem; it’s a category error.
